Useful to know

Boston is a port and market town in Lincolnshire. The town is situated on the edge of The Wash on the border of Lincolnshire and Norfolk. In the 15th century, it was the wealthiest port outside London.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, trade made Boston a centre of intellectual influence, including the Christian teachings of John Calvin, which revolutionised Boston residents’ religious beliefs. Some Bostonians joined pilgrimages to the Netherlands and the Mayflower ship to America to escape the pressure to conform to the English Church. These pilgrims founded the city of Boston, Massachusetts.

There are plenty of historic and interesting sites to explore near Boston. Take a look at some of the options here:

  • The Bubble Car Museum  – this pays homage to the micro-cars of Britain’s motoring history. The museum has over 50 cars on display, and visitors can ride in a Bubblecar on selected dates.
  • Boston Central Park – this is an attractive green space in the town’s centre with parks, gardens and playgrounds.
  • Boston May Fair – On the 1st of May each year, the Boston streets are lined with rides, food stalls, game stalls, slides and lots more. The annual Boston May Fair is a fun-filled day out for all the family.
  • St Botolph’s Church (Boston Stump) – The iconic 272-foot medieval tower stands as England’s tallest parish church tower, offering spectacular views across Lincolnshire from its viewing platform. The magnificent 14th-century St Botolph’s Church, commonly known as The Stump, dominates the town. There are spectacular views of The Wash estuary and the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds from the top of the tower. (St Botolph’s Church, PE21 6NP)
  • Maud Foster Windmill – This five-sail working windmill from 1819 stands as one of England’s largest operating windmills, offering tours and freshly ground flour for sale. (Willoughby Road, PE21 9EE)
  • Boston Guildhall Museum – A beautifully preserved medieval guildhall where the Pilgrim Fathers were tried, featuring exhibits about Boston’s history and connections to America. (South Street, PE21 6HT)
  • Custom House – An elegant Georgian building on the waterfront that tells the story of Boston’s maritime trade, now serving as a local information centre. (South Street, PE21 6HT)
  • Boston Market Place – One of England’s largest markets, operating since 1125, this historic marketplace still holds markets twice weekly. (Market Place, PE21 6EH)
  • Hussey Tower – A rare surviving example of a medieval brick-built tower house, offering insights into 15th-century architecture. (Boston, PE21 6HA)
