Wellingborough is a historic market town in Northamptonshire situated on the north side of the River Nene, near Rushden. It’s been a town since the Saxon period, the settlement is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Wendelburie”.

Wellingborough has become a popular commuter settlement as it is on the Midland Main Line connecting the town with London St Pancras, Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield. The town has a mix of Victorian terraced and detached houses alongside smart modern developments. The government have pledged to build 10,000 new homes in the town by 2031.

The Irchester Viaduct is one of the best local spots for a scenic walk or cycle. This 19th-century, 14-arch viaduct offers panoramic views of the beautiful Nene Valley. The Nene Valley Way is a 46-mile trail that winds its way across the landscape, lending itself to walkers, runners and cyclists looking for a day out in the countryside.

Wellingborough has excellent transport links. The M1 motorway is close by making London and The North easily accessible by car. By rail, Wellingborough is just 50 minutes from London St Pancras. The city also has direct train links to other UK hubs such as Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield.

Several buses serve the local area including links to Milton Keynes, Northampton, Kettering and Peterborough.

London Luton Airport can be easily reached by car or via a train and shuttle bus in 60 minutes.

Wellingborough has a good range of major chain stores and a modern shopping centre called the Swansgate Centre.

Nene Court is an independent, retail park situated in what was originally the Wellingborough Gas Light Co. In the 1990’s the early Victorian buildings were converted into shops. Nene Court now houses an exclusive array of bespoke boutiques and food outlets with ample free parking.

Supermarkets are plentiful, with Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons all present.

The town has The Castle theatre, an arts complex with many excellent dramatic products and the Waendel Leisure Centre with a swimming pool and gym facilities.

Properties in Wellingborough primarily feature Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses in the town centre, with substantial 1930s semi-detached properties and larger post-war developments in the surrounding areas. The town has some distinctive character properties, including the Victorian Gothic villas along Hatton Park Road and The Drive, and notable Arts and Crafts homes in the Redwell area.

The most prestigious properties can be found in the tree-lined streets of London Road, Hatton Park Road, and The Drive, where there are substantial detached Victorian and Edwardian houses with large gardens. The regeneration of the town centre is also ongoing, with the Tresham Garden Village development planned to provide around 1,500 sustainable new homes, though this project is still in its early stages.

Wellingborough’s job market has shifted considerably over recent decades. Where footwear and engineering once dominated, the town now hosts a broader range of sectors. Logistics remains the strongest performer, with major distribution centres from Kuehne + Nagel and others taking full advantage of the town’s position near the M1 corridor and its direct rail links to London St Pancras (around 60 minutes).

Manufacturing hasn’t disappeared entirely – companies like Scott Bader (chemicals), Lotus Lightweight Structures, and Axalta maintain a presence – but the focus has shifted towards high-performance technologies, particularly those related to transport. Cummins operates a significant Distribution Business Segment facility in the town, offering roles spanning sales, operations, quality, and IT. Retail also provides employment through businesses including Monsoon/Accessorise and Whitworths, whilst the Open University Press contributes to the education sector.
