Northampton is an historic town in the East Midlands. It was originally a walled town with a castle, but both were destroyed during the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 because the town had sided against the King during the English Civil Wars. Much of the rest of the town was destroyed by a great fire in 1675. The town was rebuilt and became famous for its shoe and leather industry. Many top brands, including Church’s, Crockett, Barkers and Jones, remain in the local area.

The property market in Northampton is busy and active. Helped by its wide range of housing styles, including grand period property, suburban family homes and smart town centre apartments. Average house prices are below the national average, making Northampton an excellent place to invest in buy-to-let property.

Northampton holds many notable landmarks and destinations to explore. Take a look at several landmarks which are worth visiting below…

Northampton has extensive shopping facilities, from high street staples to smaller independent outlets and an impressive art gallery. There are also several out-of-town retail parks. Supermarkets are plentiful, with large supermarkets like Tesco, Waitrose, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Lidl all present.

Northampton has many tempting restaurants, pubs and bars serving food and drinks from local farms and breweries. Two excellent restaurants are The Church Restaurant (actually located in a former church) and the Turkish Saray Mangal celebrated for its authentic dishes and its welcoming atmosphere.

Northampton has a competitive rental sector with apartments, two-bedroom homes and larger family homes all in high demand. Strong rents coupled with lower-than-average property prices mean Northampton offers attractive rental yields.

Victorian terraced houses line many central streets, while 1930s semi-detached homes spread through areas like Kingsley and Abington. The town also offers Georgian properties, particularly near the town centre, and substantial Edwardian houses in St Giles and Poets Corner. Post-World War II estates occupy outer areas, with newer builds appearing in growing districts like Upton and Collingtree.

The most sought-after properties sit in the Derngate area, where elegant Victorian villas dominate. The Billing Road features substantial detached houses with large gardens, while The Avenue in Spinney Hill presents impressive period homes. Spencer Bridge Road contains well-maintained Victorian properties, and the streets around Abington Park feature appealing bay-fronted homes from the early 1900s.

Equally, Northampton is strategically located with good road and rail links, making it easy to travel to nearby cities like Birmingham and London. The M1 motorway provides convenient access, and the train station offers regular services to all major cities.

Northampton University provides a dependable market for student accommodation.
